Açaí Blackberry Avocado Whip

How good does this sound? Definitely better than it was!

I learned a few days ago that Reddi Whip is keto-friendly! This news got me so excited. So I decided I was going to figure out how to make the most delicious keto smoothie/whip. In case you don’t know what a “Whip” is, at Disney they have these to-die-for smoothie type drinks called Dole Whips. What I describe below is in no way how you make a Dole Whip. I was simply using my imagination on how to make one keto-friendly with Reddi Whip. (Perhaps I should have looked up the Dole Whip recipe first 🧐)

I went to the store, walked down the frozen fruit isle because the frozen bags have the carbs listen. Woah! Fruits have alot of carbs! I really felt that I was going to find some good fruits to make this whip with. But after standing in the door of the frozen fruit section long enough to fog up every window of that row, I did not find one bag of fruit that had less than 10g of carbs. Then I saw “unsweetened” and I say – hey that’s probably good… its purple so its pretty and everything purple tastes good, right? And only 4g – that’s way low compared to these other fruits – so açaí it is. I read the back of the package and the recipe to make a smoothie – 1/4 cup of liquid…ok, so my choice, cool – 1/2 banana – and other fruit desired. That’s great – I’ll use my heavy whipping cream and I heard you can use an avocado instead of a banana for thickness. I swing over and grab the Reddi Whip and head home with lots of energy and groovy car dance moves.

Once I’m home I immediately head to the kitchen to dig my blender out of oblivion. It’s a little scarred but seems like it still works. I get started right away, I throw in the package of frozen *unsweetened* açaí – 1/4 cup of heavy whipping cream – says half a banana, should I do half an avocado? Nah – just do the whole thing! It’s a keto freebie! I do usually have 2 oz of blackberries a day, so I threw those in there – they will add sweetness. I proceeded to blend the crap out of this smoothie. I take the lid off and I was a bit surprised at how thick it looked – and the color turned a little more poopy purple, but whatever. I pour it in my cup and then I realize I’ll need the spatula to get the rest out – so I put everything down and lick the bit that got on my finger – and immediately gagged and spit into the sink.

So purple doesn’t mean delicious afterall. Had I thought that through, I would have reasoned that eggplant breaks that rule. But açaí is a fruit! Oh well. I still have the Reddi Whip to make this snack a delight. I grab the can of whip cream and a spatula then fill the rest of the cup with the cream. I fold the cream into the slop and scrape the rest of the smoothie into the cup – fill it again to the rim with whip cream and fold it again. Very hesitantly I taste it… okaaaay. Not so bad. I think I can eat/drink this. I top my smoothie/whip off with a healthy helping of Reddi Whip. Between you and me, I definitely went over the 2tbsp allotment of whip cream, which is 1g. I roughly counted that I used a cup, which is 16tbsp, so this initially 5g low carb treat turned into a 12g treat, which actually doesn’t end up being so keto-friendly in the end.

I almost drank it all. I was half way through when the Reddi Whip sweetness wore off like a cheap perfume. But, hey, it was my first try. I’ll keep looking for ways to be creative with keto. I’m still having fun. I’m still not feeling deprived. And I’m down 9lbs. So, I’ll call the first 10 days a complete success!
